Wakefield Leader to step down as ward councillor on 30 November

Cllr Peter Box CBE has confirmed that he will resign as a ward councillor on 30 November, the same date as he steps down as Leader of the Council.

As the new Chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire Cllr Box is leading the transformation of the organisation with a new strengthened culture of transparency and accountability. The decision to resign from Wakefield Council was made to ensure that there is absolutely no conflict of interest, as Welcome to Yorkshire receives public funding from the Business Rate Pool, of which Wakefield Council is a member.

Commenting on the decision Cllr Box said: “I am standing down as an elected member to avoid any potential conflict of interest with my new role as Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire.

“Obviously I am sad not to be able to see out my term of office as a ward councillor but having become Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire on the basis of openness and transparency, I believe that this is the right decision.

“I would like to thank the people of Altofts and Whitwood who have shown their support and voted for me over the last 36 years. It has been a great privilege to serve as your councillor.” The election of a new ward councillor for Altofts and Whitwood will take place in the local elections on Thursday 7 May 2020.
