Stop the drop… no more rubbish excuses

Don’t drop litter – and stop making rubbish excuses – that’s the message from Wakefield Council as it urges all residents to do the right thing.

The straight talking slogan was highlighted this week by Cllr Maureen Cummings at Pontefract Park – as part of the Council’s campaign to urge everyone to keep parks and green spaces, clean and tidy for all to enjoy.

With lockdown easing, more people have been spending time outdoors and unfortunately this has created a rise in the amount of litter being left behind by a small minority of people.

There’s no excuse for dropping litter anywhere. As well as looking horrible, litter costs the Council time and money to clear up. It can harm wildlife and spoils the environment for everyone.

Everyone is being asked to do the right thing – use a bin or take their litter home with them.

Cllr Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Poverty, said: “We have so many fantastic green spaces, including Pontefract Park  and we need them to stay clean and tidy, so that we can all enjoy these beautiful places. We can all do the right thing, by making sure to take home any litter.”

She added: “We’re working hard to empty the bins as often as we can, but please remember it is everyone’s responsibility to #StoptheDrop, clean up their rubbish and take it home if needed, so that our parks and country parks are a clean and welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.

“No more rubbish excuses – it’s simple, please don’t drop litter.”
