Re-imagining Castleford… the next steps

Public engagement to gather views on Wakefield Council’s ambitious plans to regenerate Castleford town centre has now closed.

Comments and ideas have been received from residents, businesses, young people, ward councillors and community and interest groups.

The next step is the analysis of the results to create a final version of the Strategic Regeneration Framework (SRF) and also to inform designs for the four projects in the Town Investment Plan (TIP).

The SRF is the official blueprint that will inform future planning decisions for the redevelopment of the town over the coming decade. The final version of the SRF will be published towards the end of the year when it goes to Cabinet for formal approval.

Castleford has been allocated £23.9million from the Government’s Towns Fund to deliver the TIP. Detailed proposals will be shared with the public in the autumn.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and ideas on our ambitious plans to regenerate Castleford town centre.

“Your views will help inform the SRF and also to develop proposals for the projects set out in the TIP, which we will share with you later this year.”

Chris Noble, Chair of Castleford Taskforce, said: “We’ve been very fortunate to be able to use this engagement to gather initial views on the projects outlined in our Town Investment Plan which the SRF lays the strategic foundation for.

“There will be further engagement with the public, currently planned for autumn 2021, so that we can really get into the detail of those projects. The feedback this time will help us to work on an initial version of those proposals.”
