Wakefield Council encourage residents to volunteer as a school governor

Working in partnership with Inspiring Governance, Wakefield Council are launching a new campaign ‘Wakefield on Board’ to encourage more people to volunteer as school governors.

There is a huge need for school governors, with at least one in 10 positions on school boards vacant in England.

Wakefield on Board seeks to highlight the benefits to becoming a school governor, including the opportunity to sharpen professional skills, grow networks, and make a difference to the community by giving back.

School governors can come from any background, as governing boards need a mix of skills, outlooks, and fresh thinking to help set a school’s vision and direction. An induction to the role of a governor and other supporting professional learning is available to support the role.

Cllr Margaret Isherwood, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Our children and young people are the future, and school governors help provide strategic leadership to raise educational standards in order to ensure they have the best start in life.

“Volunteering as a school governor provides a varied and fulfilling personal experience, which truly brings tangible benefits to young people’s futures. I would encourage anyone to put themselves forward – there is a time commitment required however this can be rich in benefits for both the volunteer, employers and the wider school community.”

Signing up as a school governor is also made quick and easy through the online application and matching service. By creating a profile residents can search for local governor vacancies and allow schools to approach them with opportunities.

Annamaria Spokes, Chair of Governors at Streethouse Primary School in Pontefract, said: “I would encourage anybody who is looking to get more involved in their local community to look at becoming a school governor. You gain first-hand insight into the challenges that schools face but also experience the wonderful work teachers and staff do every day, to improve the life chances of all young people. There is plenty of training and support available and you might be surprised at how sought-after your skills are!”
