Wakefield Council launches its Mega Solar Scheme

Wakefield Council is offering residents, that qualify, the chance to get a fully funded solar panel system installed at home.

The Mega Solar scheme installs special panels to generate renewable electricity from the sun’s rays.

The Council is providing this support to help residents reduce their fuel bills and lower carbon emissions and is committed to supporting residents to save energy and reduce fuel poverty in line with its Affordable Warmth Charter launched in 2016.

In 2019, Wakefield Council declared a Climate Emergency and created an action plan to help the Council become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030. It is also supporting actions to help the district as a whole to cut carbon emissions and to reduce fuel poverty.

Cllr Darren Byford, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, Regeneration and Property said: “We’re very pleased to be part of a scheme to support residents that gives the benefit of reducing fuel bills and cutting carbon emissions, to support our actions on climate change. Every action, every step makes a difference to helping to protect our planet.”

Cllr Maureen Cummings, Cabinet Member for Communities, Poverty and Health, said: “This is a great scheme that will help people to save money on fuels, which is a big expense for many households, especially so for those on a limited budget. I hope those eligible will apply and take up the offer.”

The offer is open to owner occupiers who have a whole household gross income of £30,000 or less. It is also for homes that have poor energy efficiency – and this will be assessed at application.

Mega Solar supports residents to install loft and cavity wall insulation upgrades, if needed to be able to receive solar panels.

The scheme is being funded by the ‘Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery’ and is only available for a very short time so residents are urged to apply now to secure their free solar PV system.

To apply contact the Energy and Homeowner Support Team on 01924 305887 or email energyteam@wakefield.gov.uk.

All of the work will delivered through Better Homes Yorkshire by the Council’s approved contractors so it’s all hassle free.
